Indian Railways Cracks Down on Train Noise
20 Oct
Summary
- Passengers face Rs 1,000 fine for loud music.
- Imprisonment up to six months for noise violations.
- Amendments to laws provide legal backing for enforcement.

Indian Railways zones are planning to enforce stricter regulations to curb loud music and video playback on trains, aiming to ensure a more comfortable travel experience for all passengers.
Southern Railway has issued a circular directing its divisions to educate passengers about refraining from using speaker mode for music and videos, as well as avoiding loud conversations. Violators of these new guidelines could be subject to fines of up to Rs 1,000 and/or imprisonment for a period not exceeding six months.
Other railway zones, including Northern and Western Railways, are also preparing to address passenger complaints regarding noise disturbances. This initiative is bolstered by recent amendments to railway laws, which provide a stronger legal framework for enforcing passenger discipline. Previously, enforcing such rules proved difficult due to a lack of specific statutory provisions, but now authorities can act more assertively.
While the move is welcomed by many, some passenger representatives have raised concerns about the railways' capacity to effectively implement and enforce these rules, citing existing shortages in personnel. They emphasize that robust enforcement is crucial for the success of these new regulations.
