Hull, a city often subjected to jokes, is now planning the potential return of its mega lido, which was demolished in 1988. This proposal gained traction following tragic open-water swimming incidents during recent hot weather, which resulted in multiple fatalities. The local council has agreed to investigate the feasibility of restoring the former lido in East Park.
The original open-air swimming pool in East Park, which opened in 1964, was a popular spot for locals until its closure in 1985. While the park now features a children's water play area and other amenities, the absence of the lido is keenly felt, especially with concerns over water safety.
Councillor Jessica Smith highlighted the recurring tragedies in open water, emphasizing its unforgiving nature. Councillor Kalvin Neal suggested the lido might need to be relocated for optimal placement. The city's only other council-run lido, at Albert Avenue Pools and Fitness, successfully reopened in 2023 after a significant refurbishment, operating seasonally from May to September.
