Summary

- The original Hula Burger was a pineapple and cheese sandwich.
- Lou Groen's Filet-O-Fish ultimately replaced the Hula Burger.

A Cincinnati restaurant is bringing back a piece of fast-food history with a reimagined Hula Burger. This meatless cheeseburger was an early offering from McDonald's franchisee Ray Kroc in the 1960s, featuring grilled pineapple and cheese on a bun.
The Hula Burger was initially available alongside Lou Groen's Filet-O-Fish, a sandwich created by another local franchisee to boost Friday sales during Lent. Ultimately, the Filet-O-Fish proved more popular and replaced the Hula Burger on McDonald's menu.
Now, Mid-City Restaurant in Downtown Cincinnati offers its own version. Executive chef Joe Cheek prepares thick pineapple slices marinated in soy, garlic, and ginger, then sears them and tops them with smoked cheddar and fried onions. While optional beef patties or fried eggs can be added, most diners opt for the pineapple-only sandwich, especially during weekend brunch.
This resurrected Hula Burger offers a unique sweet and savory flavor profile. The marinated pineapple provides a hint of spice and umami, complemented by the smoked cheddar and the crunch of fried onions. It's a nostalgic bite for some and a novel treat for others.
