Some enthusiasts, like a 28-year-old radiographer, find the game so captivating they rent their own machines. Players range from those content with any prize to collectors seeking rare, potentially valuable items. One avid player recounted spending over HK$4,000 at a single arcade.

Despite the appeal, concerns about excessive spending and potential addiction have emerged. In May, authorities proposed stricter regulations, including addiction risk warnings. Claw machines were previously exempted from public entertainment licenses, leaving them largely unregulated.

Serious players have voiced grievances about operators allegedly manipulating machines by narrowing prize holes. Consumer complaints concerning altered settings surged from 16 in 2023 to 138 last year, indicating widespread issues. Nonetheless, for many, claw machines remain an affordable way to de-stress and find joy in winning prizes.
