From Salvage to Luxury: The Mirene's Remarkable Journey

Mirene, a historic houseboat with over a century of history, has been meticulously restored and transformed into a luxury motor yacht. Originally built in 1912 as a working tugboat in Oregon, Mirene served various roles, including a cannery tender in Alaska and a river tug, before its career in San Francisco Bay. By 1981, the vessel was derelict and stripped, purchased for $8,000 as salvage by entrepreneur Ryan Phelan and Stewart Brand.

Phelan and Brand, a notable couple known for their work in biotechnology conservation and the Whole Earth Catalog respectively, embarked on a decades-long restoration. They transformed Mirene into a charming houseboat, preserving its retro aesthetic while incorporating modern amenities, including a full kitchen and a Japanese soaking tub. This unique home boasts clever storage solutions within its 583 square feet.

Beyond its houseboat capabilities, Mirene was refitted in 1996 to become a fully functioning seafaring yacht, undertaking sea trials by 1997. It has since cruised the San Francisco Bay and the Delta, capable of hosting over 30 guests. The houseboat and yacht, berthed at 13 S 40 Dock in Sausalito's Waldo Point Harbor, is now listed for sale at $1 million, a significant discount from its initial asking price of $1.8 million in October 2025.
