High School Teacher Pumps Breast Milk During Class to Support Breastfeeding

In November 2025, Kayla Kipley, a 32-year-old high school English teacher, faced a unique challenge when she returned to the classroom after maternity leave. Determined to continue breastfeeding her second child, Kipley needed to pump every few hours throughout the day, often during key teaching periods.

Unwilling to let her students' learning be interrupted, Kipley found a creative solution - she began using a wearable, discreet breast pump during her classes. Kipley explains that she goes into a separate room to put the pumps in her bra and remove them, and she only pours the milk and cleans the pumps during passing periods. To avoid disrupting her students, Kipley plays background music and keeps a distance from them while pumping.

Despite facing some initial backlash for sharing her experience online, Kipley's students have been nothing but understanding. The 13- and 14-year-old freshmen in her second-period class have been respectful and even curious about the process. Kipley is determined to continue sharing her journey in hopes of inspiring other teachers and mothers, even though the district has prohibited her from filming pump-and-pour videos in her classroom.
