A historian has launched a new Hessle history trail designed to illuminate the town's rich and often overlooked past. The trail, presented on an A3 handout with artistic maps and illustrations, directs attention to 45 significant historical locations within Hessle, encompassing notable buildings and churches. This initiative aims to foster a deeper appreciation for the town's heritage among residents and visitors alike.
The history of Hessle is extensive, with evidence of settlement reaching back to the 6th Century. Historical records indicate a church, a priest, and a modest population of around 100 in the town during the Domesday Book era. The trail also points out historical features like the former stocks, used for public punishment of minor offenses.
Funding for this project came from the Do It For East Yorkshire community grant scheme. Copies of the detailed trail are available at local venues such as Hessle Town Hall and All Saints' Church, and more information can be found on the Hessle Local History Society's social media channels.
