In a remarkable act of bravery, Lieutenant Khatu Khubchandani of the Portsmouth Police Department rescued an elderly black dog from a freezing, muddy pond at Montaup Country Club. The incident occurred yesterday morning when the dog became stranded in the icy waters, approximately 8 AM.
Braving frigid temperatures around 35°F, Lieutenant Khubchandani had to break through the ice and wade into the thick, cold mud. He successfully reached the distressed animal, safely removed it from the dangerous situation, and reunited the 'howling' dog with its grateful owner.
The Portsmouth Police Department shared photos of the rescue, emphasizing that the dog is now safe and warm, with Animal Control following up. This heartwarming rescue, occurring during a period when Rhode Island officials noted a lack of ice depth monitoring, drew praise from the community for the officer's 'above and beyond' actions.
