HairSpiracy: Art, Culture & Community Unite in Portland

HairSpiracy is set to host its latest event, 'The Hair Collection,' this Saturday at Kinship in Southeast Portland. This unique gathering serves as a part museum exhibit, part runway showcase, and a community event celebrating Black hair as a living art form. The organization was founded by Hanna Steigman, an educator and transracial adoptee, to create a welcoming space for learning about and appreciating textured hair.

'The Hair Collection' will feature local stylists, designers, and models presenting spring and summer hairstyles, including finger waves, braids, and sculptural runway looks. Attendees can expect live demonstrations of techniques, a marketplace for hair and beauty goods from local vendors, and an exhibition of art and style. DJ OG Too will provide music, complemented by food and champagne, creating a full sensory experience.

Angie Parker, HairSpiracy's lead educator, emphasizes the event's educational component, highlighting demonstrations on finger waves and box braids. Beyond aesthetics, the event frames hair as a profound statement of identity, history, and cultural practice. This celebration comes at a critical time, following a Consumer Reports investigation that found harmful chemicals in many braiding hair products, underscoring the importance of spaces like HairSpiracy for education and community dialogue.

Hanna Steigman intentionally curates vendors, prioritizing those personally connected to their products and communities. She likens the event's purpose to discovering the newest trends and talent, similar to New York Fashion Week. The event aims to leave attendees inspired and with a deeper understanding of hair artistry, identity, and culture, fostering a sense of community and mutual appreciation.
