Grandmother's Fearless 90ft Abseil for Charity
8 Sep
Summary
- A grandmother will abseil 90ft for charity.
- The challenge marks 40 years since her injury.
- She had no support after her initial accident.
A grandmother from Oswestry, Shropshire, is set to conquer her fear of heights by participating in a 90ft (27m) abseil. This courageous act is planned for September 19th and serves as a poignant commemoration of the 40th anniversary of a spinal cord injury Miranda Jenks sustained in 1986.
At 61, Jenks experienced a motorbike accident shortly after finishing college. She was discharged from the hospital without adequate specialized support or guidance for her injury. This lack of initial assistance has shaped her life, requiring continuous adaptation and improvisation.
Jenks, a mother of four, will also undertake a one-mile canoe challenge on the same day, both events benefiting the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA). The abseil will occur at Dukes Barn, an outdoor education centre in Derbyshire, supporting another charity. Her injury has significantly impacted her lower body mobility, necessitating mobility aids for walking short distances and a wheelchair for outings.
