Cyclist's Life Packed Onto Two Wheels for Global Adventure

Annabelle Golden, a 27-year-old from Long Island, N.Y., recently concluded the initial phase of her extraordinary global cycling expedition, traveling 25,315 kilometers from Norway to Cape Town, South Africa. This extensive journey, spanning 797 days, involved transforming her life to fit entirely onto specially designed touring bicycles.

Golden and her partner, Alex Ohtea, spent nearly ten months planning and preparing for this cross-continental adventure. They collaborated with a custom frame builder to create durable steel bicycles, prioritizing reliability with features like carbon belt drives and tubeless tires, essential for remote travel.

Every item, from clothing to camping gear and tools, was intentionally chosen for its multipurpose nature and light weight, fitting into panniers and frame bags. Golden describes her bike as her "house" and transportation, carrying everything needed for months of travel.

The couple began their journey in spring 2024, flying to Norway. Their daily routine involves rising early, packing their bicycles, and cycling 40 to 90 miles over six to eight hours. They often camp or stay in modest guesthouses, utilizing networks like Warm Showers for accommodation.

Golden emphasizes that this method of travel is remarkably cost-effective, with expenses primarily limited to food, beer, visas, and occasional hotels. This frugal approach allows for a more immersive experience of the landscapes and cultures they encounter.

Her journey through diverse terrains, from Norway's fjords to the Sahara Desert, has provided unforgettable experiences and encounters with local people. These spontaneous interactions, often facilitated by her social media presence, highlight the unique opportunities for connection that arise from a slower pace of travel.

Golden actively shares her adventure on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, finding that her content resonates widely and inspires viewers. A viral TikTok video even led to a smoother border crossing in Mauritania, demonstrating the powerful reach of her shared experiences.

Having completed the Africa leg, Golden and Ohtea are now in South Africa, planning the next stages of their world-cycling goal, continuing to inspire others with their ambitious and intentional approach to life and travel.
