10 Jan
Summary
- A 12-year-old girl is walking 122 miles for Guide Dogs.
- Her buddy dog, Spirit, helped her regain confidence after sight loss.
- The challenge aims to raise awareness and show bravery.

Aniyah, a 12-year-old from Grimsby, has embarked on an ambitious 122-mile walking challenge to benefit Guide Dogs. This significant undertaking is a testament to the support she received from the charity, particularly her buddy dog, Spirit, who helped her overcome sight loss and regain confidence.
Diagnosed with macular dysfunction in late 2023, Aniyah experienced a significant loss of confidence, leading to withdrawal. The arrival of Spirit in September, shortly after she began secondary school, provided a crucial focus and aided her mental well-being. Buddy dogs are specifically trained to help children with sight loss build confidence and independence.
Aniyah began her challenge on New Year's Day with a seven-mile walk along Cleethorpes seafront. Her mother, Lea, describes Aniyah as incredibly brave, highlighting her desire to raise awareness and show that she is no longer afraid to stand out, with Spirit by her side. Aniyah has already spoken publicly about her experiences and plans further talks.
