Girlguiding ditches uniforms for self-expression

Girlguiding has introduced a new uniform range, marking the first comprehensive redesign in over three decades. This initiative, developed over two years with input from 55,000 girls and women, emphasizes self-expression, belonging, and confidence. A significant change relaxes uniform requirements, with members now needing only a top for meetings and activities, a move prompted by feedback indicating girls feel most comfortable and confident when allowed to style themselves.

The charity's chief executive highlighted that the new designs balance heritage with modern features like hidden pockets and badge sashes that convert to bags. These elements, along with a focus on practicality, comfort, and sustainability, aim to further nurture the confidence evident in Girlguiding members. The organization, comprising approximately 300,000 members and 80,000 volunteers, now offers 30 new clothing items and 15 accessories that can be personalized.

Historically, Girlguiding has evolved its uniform nine times in 116 years, from the original blue skirt and stockings to the introduction of t-shirts and shorts in 1980. Notable updates include designer collaborations and the reintroduction of dresses. This latest redesign coincides with a policy change scheduled for September 6, 2026, which will restrict membership to "girls and young women," potentially impacting transgender members following a 2025 supreme court ruling on biological sex.
