Giant Lizard Found in Businessman's Truck in South Africa

A U.S. businessman experienced a shocking discovery during a recent trip to South Africa when he found a large monitor lizard lodged in his truck's wheel well. Mike Scarborough initially heard a hissing sound, believing it to be a punctured tire. Upon closer inspection, he realized a reptile had climbed into the vehicle while it was parked in the bush.

Scarborough recalled a moment of panic as he didn't immediately recognize the species, describing it as a "giant lizard." With assistance, the reptile was identified as a monitor lizard, known to bite if disturbed. Herpetologist Dr. Chad Keates confirmed that South Africa is home to two species, Nile and rock monitors, which are Africa's largest lizards.

According to Dr. Keates, both species are largely harmless and nonvenomous, though they may defend themselves if threatened. Injuries typically occur when people attempt to handle them. Research indicates Nile monitors are frequently sighted near human habitations, including urban areas, with no widespread pattern of attacks. The lizard was ultimately safely removed by its tail.
