Gen Z Digital Nomad Discovers New Life and Savings in Chile

As of November 16th, 2025, a new generation of American workers is taking advantage of the best of both worlds: holding down fully remote U.S. jobs while traveling the world. One such individual is 24-year-old Leeah Derenoncourt, a digital nomad who has found a new home in Chile's capital, Santiago.

Derenoncourt's journey began after graduating from Emerson College in December 2022. Rather than settling back in the U.S., she packed her bags and headed to Colombia, where she spent a month exploring the culture. This was just the start of her digital nomad adventure, as she later lived in Medellín on a digital nomad visa for a year, working remotely for a U.S. communications company.

Now, Derenoncourt has been living in Chile for a few months, settling into a studio apartment with her partner. Thanks to the country's lower cost of living, she is able to save over $1,200 each month - a far cry from the high rents she would face back in the U.S. These savings are earmarked for Derenoncourt's next goal: pursuing a master's degree in arts and cultural management at a more affordable European university.

While the digital nomad lifestyle has its challenges, Derenoncourt believes it's an experience every young person should have. She appreciates the work-life balance and sense of community she's found in Chile, in contrast to the grind-focused culture she experienced in the U.S. As she maps out her next adventure, Derenoncourt serves as an inspiring example of how remote work can unlock a world of possibilities.
