Gen Z Baffled by Old Car Features Like Choke
19 Feb
Summary
- Most Gen Z can't identify classic car features like the choke.
- Only 41% of Gen Z recognize a cigarette lighter.
- Some Gen Z prefer physical buttons over touchscreens.

A survey by Cazoo has unveiled a striking disconnect between Generation Z and the automotive features of yesteryear. Astonishingly, 92% of young respondents could not identify a choke, a component crucial for starting older carbureted engines in cold conditions. Similarly, a mere 41% recognized a cigarette lighter, a once-ubiquitous feature in vehicles.
The study highlights the rapid pace of automotive advancement, with features like T-bars, manual aerials, and pop-up headlights also proving baffling to most Gen Z individuals. This indicates a swift obsolescence of common car technologies from just a generation ago.
Despite the unfamiliarity with certain retro elements, the survey also found a preference among some Gen Z for tactile controls. One-third expressed a desire for physical buttons over trendy touchscreens, and a notable 24% wished for the return of cassette and CD players.
This contrasts with concerns raised by car safety experts about modern features. Trendy pop-out door handles have faced bans due to safety fears, and touchscreen infotainment systems are criticized for being dangerous distractions, demanding visual attention away from the road.
