Firefighter Climbs Mountain in Full Gear for Charity
15 Mar
Summary
- Firefighter Lou Needham will climb Snowdon in full gear.
- She carries on a tradition started by her father 40 years ago.
- The climb raises funds for PTSD999 and a fire service memorial.

Firefighter Lou Needham of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service will undertake a significant challenge on April 11, 2026, by climbing the Llanberis Path of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) while wearing full kit and breathing apparatus.
This demanding ascent honors the legacy of her father, David Needham, who completed a similar climb under air over 40 years ago. Lou, a crew manager, will rely solely on her breathing cylinders, removing her mask only briefly for hydration breaks.
The challenge is inspired by a "crazy idea" her father had during a night shift decades ago. David Needham noted the modern equipment Lou will wear is lighter than his, but the insulated nature increases the risk of heatstroke. Trained firefighters will accompany Lou, equipped with first aid supplies.
Lou is raising funds for two charities: PTSD999, which supports the mental health of emergency service workers, and the National Red Plaque Fire Service Memorial. She expressed her motivation stems from a love for challenges and a desire to push her own limits.
