A family in Shrewsbury has opened a cafe with a mission to support individuals with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Donna and Gregg Jones renovated the premises, including accessibility features like a ramp and accessible toilet, before opening in January. Their autistic son, Harvey, was the primary inspiration, as he "absolutely loves cooking."
Harvey dreams of working at the cafe once he is old enough to leave school. He has already begun helping with shifts, which has improved his social interactions as he delivers food to customers. The couple, who also have three other children, recognized a lack of support for SEN children and their parents.
This new venture aims to create a space for SEN individuals to meet and participate in activities. The cafe, located on Whitchurch Road, is fully accessible. Discussions are also in progress with a care company to have an adult with Down's syndrome work at the cafe weekly.
The entire family is involved in the cafe's operation. Their six-year-old daughter helps prepare tables, and their 15-year-old daughter assists with other tasks. The Joneses hope the cafe's success in supporting Harvey will extend to benefiting the wider community.
