Eugene Scardifield is embarking on a challenging trek to Everest base camp and beyond to honor his brother, Michael, who was murdered 11 years ago. Michael Scardifield was killed in his Stoke-on-Trent flat in 2015, an event that led Eugene into severe depression and alcohol dependency. He credits the charity Support After Murder and Manslaughter (SAMM) with saving his life.
The 47-year-old from Portsmouth will ascend to Kala Patthar at 18,519ft (5,644.5m). This arduous journey is a tribute to Michael and aims to support families affected by homicide. Eugene highlights that families serve a life sentence after such crimes, while perpetrators count down their release days.
Eugene has a history of channeling his grief into fundraising, having previously completed cycle rides and climbed multiple mountains. He finds strength by remembering his mother's courage in court and believes his brother's spirit guides him, hoping to feel his presence at Everest base camp as he did on Ben Nevis.
