10 Sep
Summary
- The Eurail Pass, a popular flexible train ticket, is now called Interrail.
- The name change officially occurred on September 10, 2026.
- Budget airlines and changing travel habits pose challenges to rail passes.
The flexible train ticket previously known as the Eurail Pass has officially rebranded to the Interrail Pass as of September 10, 2026. This name change evokes nostalgia for many who recall freewheeling European journeys using the iconic red-and-white card.
Launched in 1959 by 13 European countries, Eurail initially offered foreigners unlimited train travel. The pass expanded over the years, eventually covering 33 countries by 2020. A significant demographic for Eurail has historically been young adults, with a student pass introduced in 1971 leading to a nearly 50 percent sales increase that same year. Currently, 49 percent of pass holders are between 12 and 27 years old.
Despite selling 1.2 million passes in 2023, the Interrail Pass faces modern challenges. Budget airlines offer quicker and often cheaper travel, and a shift towards more focused travel with longer stays in fewer destinations has emerged. Furthermore, the availability of overnight trains has decreased, impacting a traditional aspect of rail travel.
The brand emphasizes that this is a name change only; all existing Eurail Passes remain valid, and prices and travel benefits are unchanged. The rebranding aims to unify the pass under a single name, as Interrail was previously the name for a similar ticket available to European residents.
