An Oklahoma woman was reunited with her beloved dog, Rio, after he was discovered nearly 1,100 miles away in North Carolina. Rio, a 10-year-old Australian shepherd, vanished from his owner Melissa Burris's home near Tulsa on July 30.
Nearly two weeks later, Guilford County Animal Services in Greensboro, North Carolina, contacted Burris. A Good Samaritan had found Rio and brought him to the shelter, where his microchip provided the vital link back to his owner.
The circumstances surrounding Rio's extensive journey remain a complete mystery. Neither Burris nor animal services officials can explain how the dog traveled such a vast distance from Oklahoma to North Carolina.
Burris traveled to North Carolina to retrieve Rio, who was found to be healthy and happy upon their reunion. The incredible reunion highlights the importance of microchips in reconnecting lost pets with their families.
