3 Jul
Summary
- Doddington's carnival celebrates 40 years by seeking former princes and princesses.

- The village carnival started in 1986, evolving from a sports day since 1922.

Doddington Village Sports and Carnival is marking its 40th anniversary with a unique initiative: reuniting former carnival princes and princesses. Organizers have launched a search for 62 individuals who held these roles since the carnival's inception in 1986.
Social media has been the primary tool in this quest, with 12 former participants responding so far. The aim is to gather these past royals for a special parade float and a commemorative photo opportunity during Saturday's event. Participants were typically aged between nine and 11 and were chosen by random draw from the local primary school.
The celebrations also include a scarecrow and fancy dress competition. Roads through the village are expected to be closed from 09:00 BST for the festivities, which typically draw over 800 people to the sports field.
While the carnival itself began in 1986, the village sports day, held concurrently, has a much longer history, dating back to 1922. This earlier event originated as a sports day for the village school.
