Dishwasher Tabs Outshine Powders: Study Reveals Top Picks
20 Oct
Summary
- Dishwasher tabs proved more effective than powders in a recent test.
- Finish Powerball Ultimate 0% Tabs topped the list with a 77% score.
- Cheapest product, Housebrite Dishwasher Powder, performed worst.
Consumer advocacy group Choice has determined that dishwasher tabs are a more effective cleaning solution than traditional powders. In a comprehensive test evaluating 34 different detergents, tabs consistently outperformed powders. The top-performing product was Finish Powerball Ultimate 0% Tabs, achieving a score of 77%.
Two other tab-based products tied for second place, both scoring 76%. Notably, Earth Choice All-in-1 Dish Tablets offered a more budget-friendly option at $0.42 per wash compared to its competitors. In contrast, the worst-performing product, Housebrite Brite Dishwasher Powder, costing a mere $0.08 per wash, only scored 40%.
Powders' primary advantage lies in their affordability, but their simpler formulations often result in lower cleaning efficacy. Tablets, due to their more complex composition including rinse aids, offer a more controlled and effective dosage for stain removal and grease breakdown.
For optimal results, it's advised not to pre-rinse dishes excessively, allowing the dishwasher's sensors to gauge the appropriate washing intensity. This ensures the appliance performs at its best without unnecessary pre-rinsing.
