Dewey Beach's iconic The Starboard is set to host the 29th Annual Running of the Bull this Saturday, June 27. This quirky event, a parody of Spain's Pamplona run, replaces real bulls with two individuals in a costume. A local celebrity will play the role of the matador, armed with a foam sword instead of a traditional one.
Festivities will include live music and signature orange crushes throughout the day. This beloved tradition also serves a charitable purpose, collecting donations for the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company. Owner Steve Montgomery expressed excitement for the "silliness and craziness" of the event.
The Running of the Bull originated in the mid-1990s as a beach house tradition started by Michael McDonnell and his friends. It evolved into a full-fledged event when Montgomery acquired The Starboard, with additions like a flyover and a children's run bolstering its legendary status. This year's matador is known as "The Bob-ador."
Questions regarding The Starboard's new pavilion have been addressed; the structure is tall enough to ensure the event proceeds without any changes to its longtime location in front of the restaurant.
