Suren, an 18-year-old Bactrian camel cherished by many at the Detroit Zoo, died this week after a period of declining health. Zoo officials announced her passing, citing increasing discomfort and mobility challenges related to osteoarthritis as the primary cause.
Her dedicated animal care and veterinary teams employed several treatments, including stem cell therapy and joint injections, in an effort to ease her suffering and maintain her quality of life. Despite these efforts and additional supportive care, Suren's condition did not improve, leading to the difficult decision for compassionate euthanasia.
Suren, who arrived at the zoo in 2009 as a 9-month-old, was known for her gentle nature, intelligence, and leadership qualities. She was also an exceptional mother, and her legacy endures through her daughter, Rusi, born in 2017, who remains at the zoo. A compatible companion for Rusi has been identified, ensuring she will not be alone.
Suren's passing follows that of her daughter Tula in November 2025, and her partner Rusty in April 2025. She had four offspring in total: Bulgan, Humphrey, Rusi, and Tula. Bactrian camels, characterized by their two humps, typically live for about 17 years.
