First Baptist Dallas has initiated the $130 million reconstruction of its historic sanctuary, two years after a fire in July 2024 destroyed the original 134-year-old structure. The church broke ground on the new sanctuary, with plans for completion by Easter 2028.
The architectural design includes 16 new stained glass windows depicting biblical stories and a newly designed steeple. Significantly, two original walls from the church that survived the fire will be integrated into the new building, preserving a tangible link to its past. The sanctuary will complement the church's larger worship center completed in 2013.
Senior pastor Robert Jeffress recounted the shock of witnessing the fire and emphasized the church's strong foundation of faith and commitment to its downtown Dallas location. Despite other institutions considering departures from the area, First Baptist Dallas remains committed to its historic site.
