- The treehouse is considered a vital, relaxing space for the son.

A father and his nine-year-old son, Cooper, are facing the imminent demolition of a treehouse they built together in Burrow's Field, Cheltenham. The structure was created as a therapeutic space to help Cooper, who has autism and severe anxiety, overcome his reluctance to leave home. His mother noted he had gone 60 days without leaving the house previously due to mental health difficulties.
Cheltenham Borough Council has stated the treehouse cannot remain without public liability insurance, citing a duty of care. Councillor Steve Harvey confirmed the structure will be safely removed and recycled. Both Cheltenham Borough Council and Leckhampton with Warden Parish Council have reportedly been unable to secure insurance for the treehouse due to the very poor health of the tree.
The family expressed deep sadness and disappointment, with Cooper stating the treehouse is a place where he feels relaxed. Teenagers who assisted in building the treehouse also voiced their upset. The family is seeking alternatives, hoping for a compromise that would allow the structure to be rebuilt safely or an alternative space to be provided.
