Couple's Tandem Ride: Finding Freedom After Kids

Chris and Nicky Clark, a couple in their sixties, have embarked on a remarkable 1,900-mile tandem cycling journey from their home in Somerset to Lisbon, Portugal. This adventure, which began recently, is driven by their search for independence as empty nesters. The trip is expected to take 65 days, with the couple carrying all their necessary gear, including a tent.

This expedition is the latest in a series of long-distance cycling trips undertaken by the Clarks since their four children became adults. Their shared experiences on their tandem bicycle, affectionately named Edith, have inspired a memoir titled 'Time to Change Gear.' The book chronicles their quest for freedom, fun, and adventure, exploring themes of marriage, midlife, and rediscovering oneself.

Chris explained that the memoir addresses the common question older parents face: how to achieve independence once children have left home. He noted that the journeys have also strengthened their relationship, revealing how much they enjoy each other's company. The tandem, custom-fitted for both Chris at the front and Nicky at the rear, has become a central element of their shared passion and reinvention.
