- Keeping shutters closed and staying indoors to escape the heat

As of October 1st, 2025, a severe heatwave has been affecting southwestern France, with temperatures reaching a record-breaking 40°C (104°F) in the city of Pau. In this picturesque region, musician Marylou Mayniel and her photographer partner Gil Gharbi have sought refuge with their new baby, staying with his family for the summer.
The couple has been keeping the shutters closed and staying indoors to give the air conditioning a chance to cool their temporary home. Mayniel says this is the hottest she can remember the weather being in France, a stark contrast to the lush, green Pyrenees mountains that tower over the rustic stone-brick city.
Despite the extreme conditions, the couple has managed to enjoy a rare date night, catching a film at the local cinema bar. However, for the most part, they have been housebound, living in semi-darkness to escape the scorching temperatures outside.
