28 Jan
Summary
- Copenhagen Fashion Week celebrates 20 years of pushing green standards.
- Fashion is now Denmark's third-largest export commodity.
- Sustainability framework has spurred industry-wide change.

Copenhagen Fashion Week (CPHFW) is celebrating its 20th anniversary, marking two decades of progress in sustainable fashion and fostering international success for Danish designers. Initially met with skepticism, the biannual event, which began in 2006 by merging two small trade fairs, has become a significant fixture on the global fashion calendar.
Fashion has grown to become Denmark's third-largest export commodity, with international demand seeing an 84% increase. CPHFW has been instrumental in this growth, providing a vital platform for brands like Ganni, Cecilie Bahnsen, and Baum und Pferdgarten to achieve global recognition and success.
A major highlight of CPHFW's evolution has been its robust sustainability framework, established in 2020. Brands were given three years to adhere to 18 minimum standards, including restrictions on plastic hangers and textile usage, with non-compliance leading to removal from the schedule. This initiative has been a catalyst for change, with over 30 brands now complying and other fashion councils, such as those in Britain and Germany, adopting similar measures.
