Cockapoos: Popularity Hides Behavioral Concerns
19 Mar
Summary
- Cockapoos are 44% more likely to exhibit behavioral issues.
- Aggression towards owners and strangers is a key concern.
- Owners should research crossbreed traits before purchasing.

Despite their immense popularity and teddy-bear appeal, Cockapoos are now linked to a higher incidence of behavioral problems. Research from the Royal Veterinary College indicates these popular crossbreeds are 44% more likely to display undesirable behaviors compared to their purebred parent breeds, Cocker Spaniels and Poodles.
These concerns include heightened risks of aggression towards both owners and strangers, as well as issues with dog rivalry and separation anxiety. The study suggests that the Cockapoos' smaller size combined with the inherent traits of Cocker Spaniels may contribute to these exacerbated behaviors.
Experts analyzed data from over 9,000 dogs, comparing various behavioral traits. The findings underscore the importance of thorough pre-purchase research for potential owners, who currently rely heavily on anecdotal evidence. Meeting the puppy's parents is recommended to assess their behavior before acquisition.
