The iconic Happy Diamonds collection from Chopard is celebrating its 50th anniversary, a milestone deeply connected to the creative vision of Caroline Scheufele, co-president and artistic director. Her early sketch at age 16, featuring a clown pendant with a transparent belly filled with moving diamonds, foreshadowed the jewelry's future. This concept, where diamonds move freely beneath sapphire crystal, was inspired by designer Ronald Kurowski's observation of a waterfall in Germany's Black Forest.
Originally featured in men's watches released in 1976, the 'Happy Diamonds' name was coined by Scheufele's mother, Karin, symbolizing freedom. Caroline Scheufele was instrumental in translating this concept into jewelry, launching the collection officially in 1985 with clown necklaces, the same year she joined the family business. Today, the collection remains a cornerstone of Chopard's offerings.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary, Chopard unveiled a new campaign during New York Fashion Week last month. This campaign features existing ambassador Bella Hadid and newly appointed ambassador Liu Wen. The initiative aims to appeal to a new generation of Chinese consumers, with Scheufele noting the importance of creating special editions for the Chinese market.
The anniversary also sees the reissue of the Happy Sport The First watch, originally designed by Scheufele in 1993 for active women. This reissue maintains the 1990s design, reflecting a growing trend for vintage pieces among younger luxury buyers. Scheufele observes a rising demand for distinctive, high-jewelry pieces, with jewelry sales currently outperforming watch sales at Chopard.
