China's Marriage Rate Plummets Amidst Economic Strain
14 May
Summary
- Marriage registrations dropped by 6.2% compared to last year.
- China faces a demographic crisis with a declining birth rate.
- Government initiatives like 'love education' aim to boost marriages.

Marriage rates in China have fallen sharply, contributing to a significant demographic challenge for the nation. In the first quarter of 2026, fewer than 1.7 million marriage registrations were recorded, a 6.2% decrease from the previous year. This decline is attributed to factors such as intense job competition, economic slowdowns, and a poor work-life balance, leading younger generations to reconsider traditional life paths.
As a consequence of lower marriage rates and a record low birth rate, China's population has been declining for four consecutive years. This situation is concerning for officials, especially after China lost its status as the world's most populous nation to India. Despite the relaxation of birth policies, allowing up to three children, birth rates remain low.
In response, the Chinese government is prioritizing boosting birth rates through various measures. These include financial incentives, childcare support, and extended family leave. Symbolic actions, such as a 13% tax on contraceptives, have also been introduced. Universities are being encouraged to offer "love education" and even degree programs in marriage services and management to promote positive views on family and fertility.
