As of September 27th, 2025, the Nayak family of Mangaluru has been preserving a century-old Navaratri tradition, transforming their home into a spiritual and musical haven during the festival. The tradition, which began as a humble devotional practice by the late Niddodi Babbayya Nayak in Cochin, has grown into a cherished community celebration over the past 99 years.
During World War II, the family relocated to Mangaluru, bringing with them the devotional legacy that has continued unbroken through three generations. Today, the tradition is carried forward by N Ekanath Nayak and his wife Mangalagowri Nayak, under the guidance of cousin N Gokuldas Nayak. Every evening from 6:30 pm to 9 pm, the Nayak home, 'Veera Venkatesh Prasad,' hosts bhajans, keerthans, and cultural programs by devotees, followed by puja, arathi, and prasadam distribution.
Over the decades, the Nayak home has welcomed legendary musicians, including the late Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, who not only performed but also dined with the family during one of his final visits to the city. Other renowned musicians like Devraya Kini and Upendra Bhat have also been part of this musical celebration. As the family prepares to mark the centenary next year, they are determined to continue this legacy with even greater fervour.
