Summary
- Chabbi Ganesha idols decorated with vermilion (sindhoor) are gaining popularity
- Devotees believe these idols are more benevolent and bring good fortune
- Strict rituals involved in making Chabbi Ganesha idols limit their production

As of 2025-08-25, the tradition of worshipping Chabbi Ganesha idols, which are decorated with vermilion (sindhoor), has been captivating devotees in Hubballi-Dharwad and other cities in North Karnataka for years. These Ganesha idols, known for their distinctive red color, are believed by devotees to be more benevolent and bring good fortune.
The demand for Chabbi Ganesha idols has been steadily increasing over the past 5-6 years, with more people installing them in their homes. Artisans in Hubballi's Bommapur Oni area have noted this growing trend, as the popularity of these red Ganesha idols continues to rise.
However, the process of making Chabbi Ganesha idols is quite strict and time-consuming, which has limited their production. Veeresh Hanagodimath, an artisan from Hubballi, explained that they received orders for 15 such idols this year but had to turn down further requests, as the intricate rituals and techniques involved require more time and effort.
Despite the challenges, the devotion to Chabbi Ganesha remains strong, with thousands of devotees from Karnataka and Maharashtra flocking to the village of Chabbi to have darshan of these unique idols. The tradition, which dates back to 1827, is still being carried on by the seven Kulkarni families of Chabbi who are authorized to install the sindhoor-adorned Ganesha idols.
