Cost of Living Crisis Fuels Cat Rescue Surge
28 Oct
Summary
- Animal charities report a huge increase in surrendered cats and kittens.
- Rising pet care costs, including neutering, contribute to the influx.
- Some centers are full, with long waiting lists for surrenders.
Animal welfare organizations are reporting a substantial increase in cats and kittens being taken in by their centers. The RSPCA Coventry and District Branch, for example, cared for 399 cats and kittens over the summer, a significant rise from the previous year. This trend is largely blamed on the escalating costs associated with pet ownership. Expenses such as neutering and veterinary care are proving too much for some owners.
Nationally, the RSPCA has highlighted a "cat crisis," noting that they are now caring for more felines than dogs. This influx is placing considerable pressure on their facilities. The Coventry branch, which operates independently, is currently at full capacity with 80 cats and has a waiting list of 130 people seeking to surrender their pets.
Rising veterinary costs, especially for older pets with health conditions, are forcing many owners to seek help from charities. Sadly, this has also led to an increase in abandoned animals, with kittens and cats being left in boxes and bags. Some staff also suggest that an increase in cat breeding may be contributing to the problem.
