The Carlsbad Ranch in San Diego County has officially opened its renowned flower fields, signaling the arrival of spring. Spanning 55 acres, the ranch cultivates a stunning display of flowers, most notably the giant Tecolote ranunculus, which now come in 13 distinct colors. These unique hues have been developed over decades from the three natural colors originally found.
This floral spectacle is the culmination of about six months of cultivation from seeds, thriving in San Diego's ideal climate. The ranch, operated by the Eckes family for more than 60 years, aims to share this seasonal beauty with the public. The fields are open for approximately 10 weeks annually, with peak bloom typically occurring in early April.
Beyond the visual splendor, visitors can engage in various farm experiences. These include tractor wagon rides, blueberry picking, and a 'butterfly encounter' where guests can feed butterflies. The ranch also produces olive oil from its olive trees and offers workshops for making flower crowns and bouquets. Special events like sunset wine dinners are also available.
