The Cape May County Park and Zoo is mourning the loss of two cherished snow leopards, Maliha and Bataar, who passed away this spring. Maliha, 13 years old, was euthanized in April after experiencing an unexpected medical event. Bataar, who was almost 18, passed away in early June following a year of treatment for age-related health issues.
Bataar was a significant presence at the zoo, being the first snow leopard in its newer facility and having successfully fathered cubs with a previous mate. Maliha joined him in 2021, and they remained companions. The zoo plans to introduce a new male and female snow leopard to support conservation breeding programs and species preservation.
County Commissioner Vice Director Andrew Bulakowski expressed the deep sadness felt by the zoo family and the community. He acknowledged the exceptional care provided by the animal staff, especially during the animals' final months. The future arrival of new snow leopards signifies the zoo's ongoing commitment to this species' long-term preservation.
