Pedestrian Peril: Streets Become Obstacle Courses

Pedestrians in Teynampet, specifically on Appadurai street near Seethammal Colony, face daily challenges due to severely obstructed footpaths. Construction debris, discarded items like old mattresses, and encroaching shops regularly block the sidewalks. This forces commuters, including a 31-year-old resident, to navigate dangerous roads, increasing risks, particularly for vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.

The street's condition is further exacerbated by poor infrastructure, including large potholes, uneven road surfaces, and open manholes. These hazards not only make walking treacherous but also pose risks for vehicular traffic. Sanitation issues, with garbage and debris scattered widely, contribute to an unpleasant and unhygienic environment, attracting pests and emitting foul odors.

Local officials acknowledge the persistent problems. The Teynampet Zone chairperson stated that ongoing administrative exercises had delayed addressing these issues. However, he assured that instructions would be issued to zonal authorities to rectify the problems, aiming to restore safe and accessible pedestrian pathways.
