Youth Capture Worlds Through Lenses

A recent photography workshop in Halifax provided a powerful platform for Black youth to explore their lives and communities through the lens. The "Photo Voice" initiative, led by freelance photographer Alvero Wiggins, aimed to replicate the formative experiences he had in his youth. Participants, aged 13 to 21, gathered over two days to learn how to wield photography as a tool for creative expression and storytelling.

Wiggins, who has a background in youth programming, saw this workshop as a way to merge his passion for photography with his commitment to supporting young people. The program emphasized guided discussions and hands-on practice, enabling attendees to capture the world around them and share their personal narratives. This effort seeks to put the control of their stories and images directly into the hands of the youth, fostering a stronger sense of self-perception and challenging external viewpoints.

The workshop was met with enthusiasm from its young participants. Many shared how the experience enhanced their appreciation for everyday beauty and improved their technical camera skills. For some, it marked their first foray into photography, while others honed their abilities. The project underscored a shared desire among the youth to tell stories through compelling photographs, showcasing diverse visions and experiences.
