Bishnois Mark Holi with Solemnity, Not Color
5 Mar
Summary
- Bishnois observe Holi with mourning, not festivity, on Holika Dahan night.
- The festival begins the morning after, remembering Prahlad's survival.
- Temple observances include 'Prahlad Charitra' narration and a 'havan'.

The Bishnoi community in Chandigarh and surrounding areas observed Holi with a distinct focus on devotion rather than typical revelry. While vibrant celebrations filled the Tricity, devotees at the Shri Guru Jambheshwar Bishnoi Mandir in Panchkula gathered for a solemn observance centered on the story of Prahlad.
Traditionally, Bishnois view the night of Holika Dahan with grief, as it signifies an attempt to harm the child devotee Prahlad. Consequently, many families practice restraint, opting for simple meals and a somber mood. The true festival begins the next morning, honoring Prahlad's unwavering faith.
At the Panchkula temple, around 200-250 devotees listened to the 'Prahlad Charitra,' recounting Prahlad's devotion and Lord Vishnu's intervention. This deep connection earns the community the description 'Prahlad panthi.'
The observance continued with a 'havan' and the distribution of 'pahal,' a significant ritual offering. This marked the conclusion of the temple's unique Holi traditions, with devotees gradually dispersing by late morning.
