9 May
Summary

- Rock unexpectedly broke into dozens of pieces during removal.
- Community members share deep emotional connection to the rock.

Many in Whatcom County are expressing heartbreak and a sense of betrayal following the recent removal of the iconic Bellingham Rock from its roadside location along I-5. The rock, a cherished local landmark, was expected to be preserved and relocated, but its removal for a fish passage project led to an unforeseen outcome.
WSDOT has confirmed that the rock's unique composition caused it to break into dozens of smaller pieces during the necessary drilling and grouting process. This was contrary to an initial plan to move larger, intact sections.
One resident, Sally Odegaard, shared a deeply personal connection, having painted the rock 38 years ago and more recently for her late daughter's memorial. She, like many others, feels a profound sense of loss, comparing the rock's demise to the death of an old friend.
WSDOT stated that the fragmented pieces are being kept safe and will eventually be offered to the community for a limited time. They intend to announce details regarding the distribution of these pieces at a later date.
