Beijing Zoo will open its newly expanded giant panda pavilion on Thursday, coinciding with the zoo's 120th anniversary celebration. This significant development provides a greener and more advanced home for five of the zoo's ten giant pandas. The 13,000-square-meter facility, designed in the style of a traditional Chinese garden, aims to create a naturalistic environment for both the animals and visitors.
This pavilion is notable as China's first animal facility to receive a three-star green building rating. Its design emphasizes low-carbon principles and recycling, utilizing recycled construction materials for its bamboo-patterned exterior. Advanced Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology ensures intelligent operation and maintenance, including automated environmental controls, ventilation, health monitoring, and a misting system for cooling.
The new pavilion, alongside the 1990 Asian Games Pavilion, will form the zoo's main public exhibition space for giant pandas. The zoo plans a rotating exhibition schedule to allow visitors to see different pandas on future visits. To enhance the visitor experience, the zoo is also offering a limited-edition commemorative ticket and has upgraded surrounding areas with panda-themed merchandise and a new cafe.
