24 Feb
Summary
- Wildlife rescuer sees more calls and donations after award win.
- Community group revitalizing park sees increased supporter numbers.
- Awards recognize local people making a positive difference.

Emily Bentham, a wildlife rescuer operating from her home in Upper Enham, has experienced a substantial increase in both public support and donations following her receipt of a BBC Radio Solent Make a Difference award in the animal category. This recognition has led to a significant rise in calls and animals being brought to her for rescue.
Bentham, who began her animal rescue efforts at age 13, now handles a constant flow of animals. She emphasized the importance of these awards for acknowledging those who contribute positively to society and encouraged others to nominate deserving individuals in their own areas.
Separately, the Friends of Bartley Park, a group dedicated to revitalizing their local park in Totton, has also seen a growth in participation and support since winning a Make a Difference Green Award. Founder Dave Young noted the return of wildlife to the park, which was previously in a less vibrant state.
The Make a Difference Awards, hosted by BBC Local Radio stations across the country in 2026, aim to honor and thank individuals and groups who go above and beyond to improve their communities. Nominations are accepted via the BBC Make a Difference website.
