A retired police dog named Bane, who served with Cambridgeshire Police, has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He has been given an estimated six weeks to live.
Bane, a nine-year-old general purpose and firearms support dog, collapsed recently and was found to have a tumor and fluid on his heart. Specialists drained the fluid to provide him with more time.
His owners, who live in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, are now creating a bucket list to make his final weeks special. They plan to take him on a final holiday and to his favorite playing field, as well as getting him new toys.
Bane's family adopted him after his handler could no longer keep him. He joined the police at four months old and served for five years. His owner described him as a gentle giant, noting his protective nature towards their young daughter.
The Thin Blue Paw Foundation, a charity supporting retired police dogs, has covered Bane's emergency veterinary bill, which amounted to over £3,700. The foundation's founder helped secure swift specialist treatment for Bane.
