A 23-year-old British backpacker faces a permanent ban from Australia due to having cystic fibrosis. Regan Sparks, who has traveled extensively and trains for marathons, applied for a working holiday visa in 2023, declaring her genetic disorder. Despite her proactive management of the condition and offers to fund her own healthcare privately, her application was rejected.
Sparks' visa ordeal spanned over two years and cost about $1,000 in medical exams. The Australian government cited her condition as a potential drain on Medicare, despite her having not been hospitalized in over two years. Even an attempt to secure a tourist visa was met with similar rejections, requiring another expensive medical examination.
She expressed her frustration, stating the decision was based on hypothetical costs rather than her personal circumstances. Sparks believes the ban is discriminatory, as she has never let cystic fibrosis prevent her from pursuing her goals. The Department of Home Affairs stated that applications are assessed individually based on legal requirements and potential costs exceeding $86,000.
