Australia's First Michelin Stars Awarded to SA
16 Oct
Summary
- South Australia is the first Australian state to receive Michelin stars.
- Magill Estate restaurant earned two stars, with 10 others receiving one.
- The Michelin Guide's expansion into Australia was a unique deal with South Australia.
South Australia has officially entered the prestigious Michelin Guide, marking the first time the culinary bible has awarded stars in Australia. Eleven restaurants across the state received distinctions, with Magill Estate in Adelaide earning the highest accolade of two stars. Ten other venues were awarded one star, celebrating their culinary excellence.
This historic achievement was made possible by South Australia striking its own deal with the Michelin Guide, bypassing a previously failed nationwide agreement. The initiative aims to place South Australia firmly on the world culinary map, showcasing its diverse gastronomic offerings which blend international traditions with native Australian ingredients.
The Michelin Guide's inspectors anonymously evaluated restaurants based on five criteria, including ingredient quality and chef's personality. While South Australia is the first state featured, the guide's expansion to other parts of Australia has not yet occurred.
