A dedicated animal lover, 91-year-old Barbara Keel, is set to attend a prestigious garden party at Buckingham Palace this May. Keel established the Barby Keel Animal Sanctuary in Bexhill, East Sussex, back in 1979, initially with only three animals.
Today, the sanctuary provides a home for over 600 animals, including cats, dogs, chickens, pigs, and goats. Keel, who has no plans to retire, continues to work tirelessly every day, rising at 7:00 AM to care for the animals before dedicating afternoons to paperwork. The sanctuary has grown from a four-acre field and a caravan to its current substantial size.
This royal invitation is a significant recognition of Keel's lifelong commitment. Her team expressed their joy on Facebook, stating that Barby has finally received recognition for her selfless work. Despite the sanctuary being full, Keel emphasized their commitment to making room for animals in need, though she noted 2026 has been a particularly challenging year for rehoming efforts.
Keel views her attendance as representing her team, supporters, and the animals she cares for. She will be wearing a trouser suit and new shoes chosen by a friend for the occasion, acknowledging that while it might be uncomfortable, she is prepared to do anything for her beloved animals and her dedicated team, whom she affectionately calls her 'motley crew.'
