American Airlines is embracing nostalgia as it approaches its 100th anniversary by introducing a new series of retro-inspired trading cards for passengers. Beginning in early May, these collectible cards will be available on select flights, distributed directly by pilots. This initiative aims to capture moments from the airline's extensive history, featuring a mix of contemporary aircraft and iconic vintage planes like the DC-3 and 707-123.
Captain Alan Johnson, American's vice president of flight operations, stated that these cards represent a century of shared experiences between pilots, planes, and passengers. Each card includes an image of the aircraft, technical specifications, and historical facts, making them a valuable piece of aviation history for enthusiasts. Millions of cards are slated for printing ahead of the summer, increasing travelers' chances of obtaining one on a first-come, first-served basis.
This move follows American Airlines' earlier tapping into nostalgia with a retro-inspired in-flight menu, which debuted in February and featured dishes like beef Wellington and prawn cocktail. Competitors like Delta Air Lines have also engaged in similar collectible campaigns, offering pilot trading cards for years and planning centennial-themed collections in 2025.
