Wheelchair users are discovering new levels of freedom thanks to a fleet of all-terrain disability scooters. These specialized vehicles, often referred to as 'trampers,' are making it significantly easier to access and enjoy the great outdoors.
Across south-west England alone, 39 beauty spots and attractions now provide these scooters for hire. The initiative extends nationwide, with a total of 60 sites offering the service. This hire scheme, managed by the charity Disability Together, operates for a small charge.
Its primary purpose is to foster greater independence and promote inclusivity for individuals with mobility challenges. Wheelchair user Kate Wass described the tramper as her 'legs,' emphasizing her desire to access the countryside and experience it like everyone else. She highlighted the profound impact of being able to 'get out, smell the air, the peace,' and hear the birds.
